February 21: Top Ten Books I Loved More Than I Thought I Would
When I hear a book has received a huge amount of hype, I tend to downplay my expectations for fear of being disappointed. Thankfully, more often than not, I am pleasantly surprised when I too believe the hype.
1. If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo
This YA story about a transgender teenage girl was wonderful and heartfelt. The main character was interesting and the plot was perfectly constructed.
2. Unboxed by Non Pratt
A fantastic YA contemporary with friendship (and LGBT themes) at the heart: four friends come together to celebrate the life of the fifth member of their group.
3. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
A YA novel with magical realism at the core, this book follows teenage Conor and his battle with both his inner demons and the outside world.
4. Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Featuring a teenage girl with a severe illness, this YA contemporary is about friendship and finding your own path.
5. One by Sarah Crossan
This YA tale about twin sisters is told in free verse: its themes include love, friendship and loss.
6. The 100 by Kass Morgan
This YA sci-fi novel features a strong cast of characters and the plot is fast paced – I’m quite literally obsessed with this series.
7. Confessions of a GP by Dr. Benjamin Daniels
A non-fiction work consisting of hilarious anecdotes of a real GP, this is a fun read for all the right reasons.
8. Foe by J.M. Coetzee
A strange story incorporating magical realism, this re-telling of Robinson Crusoe features a quirky character, a shipwreck and a search for a long lost daughter.
9. George by Alex Gino
This important middle grade novel stars a transgender child during her transition, and the issues she faces from her family and peers.
10. I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes
I loved this crime/thriller, which followed a terrorist across the globe – I cannot wait for the second novel in the series!
